Happy Anniversary!

February 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of my paper with Alan Jackson entitled “Increased systolic blood pressure in adult rats, induced by fetal exposure to maternal low protein diets.”. That was the seminal work that changed my career and set me on the path of research that I am still plodding. This paper was the first to demonstrate that reducing the nutrient intake of a pregnant animal had an effect upon the blood pressure of the resulting offspring. Hundreds, maybe thousands, have followed since and my paper has attracted over 500 citations from other authors. Interestingly, the paper is the 6th most highly cited (and close to being 5th) paper ever published by Clinical Science. That’s ironic as they were so reluctant to publish it that they published an accompanying commentary to make it quite clear they didn’t believe the findings.

Well done me…
